Some traditions have stood the test of time & are still being honoured today will some rituals are no longer practiced.

The traditional wedding cake we all know today as originally made from many small wheat based cakes. They were traditionally broken over the head of the new bride. This tradition was to ensure good luck & fertility for the bride as she entered her new life a married woman. I’m sure there are many brides (and hairdressers) who are relieved this no longer takes place today!

As well as signifying the end of the wedding formalities (and the start of the party!), the cutting of the cake used to symbolise the impending loss of a brides virginity.Other folklore states that if an unmarried person sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under their pillow they will dream of their future spouse that night (just be careful of the crumbs!!)

London Wedding Venues

The top tier of a couple’s wedding cake was traditionally kept & eaten at the christening tea of the couple first born but today it’s more than likely the top tier will be used to celebrate a first wedding anniversary.Charms placed on top of a wedding cake have different symbolism & meaning. Please see below :

The top tier of the wedding cake was traditionally kept and used at the christening of the couple's first child. But today, this tradition has been modified slightly, and the top tier is saved to be used at the couple's first anniversary. A final tradition was that of placing charms in the wedding cake attached to ribbons. The bridesmaids would then be asked to pull a ribbon & the charm she received would symbolise the following:

- A Heart: Means love
- A Clover: Will bring good luck
- An Engagement Ring: Your wedding is round the corner
- An Anchor: Travel & adventure are on the cards
- A Flower: Love will bloom soon
- A Horseshoe: Luck will be with you now and always.
